MAY FEATURE: Mackenzie Leigh Meyer

May 22, 2018

Name: Mackenzie Leigh Meyer

Hometown: Hamilton

Preferred Art Form: Music, Performance and Songwriting

Artist Bio:

Launched into the music scene after winning the 2013 Hamilton Music Awards Rising Star Competition, the now 23 year old has already been all over Ontario performing at major festivals and calling “home” to many of southern Ontario’s A-list country music venues. Last year alone she spent 336 hours performing over 75 gigs.

In 2016 she caught the eye of renowned producer Ken Scott (David Bowie) who commented “watch out Carrie Underwood” after producing her single “Should Have Known”, one of the many colours on Mackenzie’s debut EP.

Dive Bar Diva’s beauty is seen in it's ability to flaunt all of the diverse and dynamic sides that comprise Mackenzie. The EP soars through the many sub-genres of modern country music; ranging all the way from the vulnerable-americana "Your Company" to her confident, attitude-riddled-blues "Hope You're Lonely", and rounds off with her poignant, emotional ballad "More than a Memory".

Whether that's heartbreak, happiness, loneliness, etc. each song starts from a place of honesty and evolves into a narrative that reflects that emotion. Sometimes those plots are true to my life, sometimes they're not. But all of them originate from personal and emotional moments in my life.

What has been the most influential moment in your life?

It's funny because the most influential moment in my life was not a very big moment in my career. But to that question I'd have to say it was the moment that inspired me to pursue music professionally.

In Hamilton where I'm from, we annually have a Hamilton Music Awards to connected as a music community and celebrate each other's accomplishments. A part of that weekend is a Rising Star Competition for new artists to compete in. When I was just starting out, I competed in that contest and ended up winning with my then duo "Ash and Ember&quo
