Name: Bicyclops (Phil Johnston)
Preferred Art Form: Music and Performance
Bicyclops is the moniker of Toronto producer and multi-instrumentalist Phil Johnston.
His music, which combines rich atmospheres, electronic rhythms and a penchant for the experimental, often draws comparisons to the likes of Radiohead and Boards of Canada.
Bicyclops came into being in 2014, when Phil began to experiment with ambient compositions and sound manipulation techniques while studying neuroscience at the University of Toronto. Inspired by the unexpected effects of digitally altering organic sounds, he produced three EPs while pursuing his degree.
Fusing this experimental approach with focused songwriting and live instrumentation culminated in Bicyclops’ first full-length offering, entitled Near – a collection of warmly textured and emotive pieces, driven by compelling melodies and crisp electronic rhythms.
Bicyclops can be found playing in and around Toronto with a live band, and his work has been featured by several publications and radio stations, including Weird Canada, VIBE 105.5, and CJSW 90.9 FM.
